Backyard Discovery designs Kids Play sets for self-assembly at home. Here is what to prepare, how long it takes and what to check afterwards.

Before assembly
Tools required
Drill, screwdriver, hammer and measuring tape. Spanners and screw setters are included.
Preparing your space
Pick a flat area and clear away any debris. Leave 2 m of free space on each side of the set. If it has swings, leave extra space in front of and behind them: twice the swing's height in each direction.
Safety precautions
Wear gloves and safety goggles. Before you start, read the instructions through and check all the parts for damage. Follow the instructions step by step and use each tool as they tell you. Keep children and pets away from the work area to avoid accidents. If you're unsure about any step, contact us or consider professional help.
During assembly
Assembly time
Two people need 7 to 20 hours, depending on the set, plus about 3 hours for a spiral tube slide. These are the manufacturer's averages, and times vary with experience.
Step-by-step guide
Start by sorting the timber by step number and laying out the rest of the parts and your tools. Assemble the base first and check that it's level. Then attach the swings and the other parts, checking each fitting as you go. The instruction manual has clear illustrations for each step, and the free BILT app takes you through the steps in 3D on your phone or tablet. If you get stuck, email or call us.

After assembly
Maintenance tips
If you want the set to keep looking new, apply a sealant or stain each spring. The wood is fine without it. Check and tighten all the hardware once a month. Look the set over regularly for wear or damage, especially before the play season, and replace worn or damaged parts promptly so it stays safe. It depends on the yearly care described in the owner's manual, such as staining once a year and tightening the hardware each season.
Safety checks
Once a month, look for loose bolts and signs of wear or damage. Check regularly that the set is stable and level and that the ground under it is free of hazards. Look at the wood for splinters, cracks or signs of rot, and test that the swings are firmly attached and not worn.
