The cheapest playground upgrade is not a new playground. A set that has gone quiet usually needs one new thing to play with, not four new towers — and the space under and around an existing fort is buildable territory. Here is what actually extends a set's life, by age and by budget.

The sandpit: the under-fort upgrade

Several of our compact sets — the Sunnydale deliberately among them — leave clear ground beneath the fort sized for a sandpit. It is the best value addition for ages two to six: shaded by the deck above, contained by the posts, and visible from the kitchen window. Use play-grade sand, edge it simply, and cover it when unused unless you wish to run a neighbourhood cat amenity. Depth of 15–20 cm is plenty; more becomes an excavation.

Swing seats: the age-dial of the whole set

The swing beam is the most adaptable part of a playground — the seat sets the age.

• Bucket seat (€99): encloses a toddler safely; the standard first swing.
• Belt swing: the classic from age three — flexible seat, heavy-duty chains. Hangers sold separately; check your beam's fittings.
• Nest swing (108 × 83.5 cm): the social seat — several children at once, lying down permitted, invariably the most contested spot in the garden. Fits beams 1.8–2.4 m.

Swapping a seat takes ten minutes and re-ages the whole set: bucket out, belt in at three; a nest added at six changes how the set is used entirely.

Slides: the serious upgrade

Two of our slides fit beyond their original sets. The spiral tube slide (fits 150 cm decks, to 85 kg, 7-year anti-fade warranty) is the transformative one — an enclosed second way down turns a one-slide set into a circuit and removes the queue. The 3 m wave slide (to 113 kg) is the like-for-like replacement when an original has served its decade.

Small things that earn their keep

A telescope (€19.90) is the cheapest imagination upgrade sold — it converts a platform into a crow's nest and a garden into a sea. Chalk for the chalkboard, ropes checked each spring, and the fort repainted by its owners count too: children maintain what they have decorated.

The rule for spending

Match the addition to the age that has gone quiet: sand for the youngest, a nest swing for the middle years, a tube slide when eight-year-olds declare boredom.
